Ackoff proposed that there are four was of solving problems: Absolution - ignoring the problem and hoping it goes away, Resolution - adopting an approach that has worked on similar problems elsewhere, Solution - developing an unique approach that address the issue faced or Dissolution - changing the system to dissolve the problem. His contention was that most problems are in fact messes, that is a number of problems and the solving a single problem will only provide temporary relieve, only by changing the system and dissolving the mess do we get a true solution.

This talk will provide an introduction to idealised design, which is the approach that Ackoff developed for dissolving problems. It also expands on the original concept and shows it can be used in different context as the basis of a more general approach to explore solutions. This talk is based on using this approach over the last 5 years.
