As the saying goes, “If all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail”.

Often when we learn about a new shiny thing, everywhere we look we see a suitable application of this idea. With this new idea at the forefront of our thinking we can become blind to other options leading to premature convergence on a solution. When we learn about Kanban we begin to see flow problems everywhere, Scrum teaches us to be transparent, but should we always be? Not that these are bad ideas, but are they universally applicable?

Not all problems are new and novel, there are patterns that we can use. In this talk, framed by Cynefin, we’ll explore context and the applicability of the methods we teach. We’ll also discuss options for teaching not just method but the theories that will allow others to develop or choose techniques applicable to the context they find themselves in.
